USA CD [Cavity Search CSR13; original 1994 pressing]
When Roman Candle was originally released in 1994, it only came out in the US and only on CD and cassette. The CD comes with a six panel booklet. According to the liner notes, the sleeve was done by Neil Gust. Cover photo by JJ Gonson. Other photos by Neil Gust. According to the info on the CD itself, the CD was made in Canada. Jewel cases, at least in some cases, have a sticker on the back that says "Made in Canada" .(Presumably these ones with "Made in Canada" stickers were considered US pressings but happened to just be made in Canada. There is no Canada pressing listed on Discogs but maybe possible that this version is actually a Canadian release?).
All or most other pressings of Roman Candle used this same artwork. Any differences will try to be noted below. No matrix info listed on Discogs but barcode is 789507611321.

USA CD [Kill Rock Stars KRS523; 2010 CD reissue]
Roman Candle was reissued on CD in 2010 by Kill Rock Stars Records. The shrinkwrap has a sticker that mentions the album name, that it's the debut, and that it was remastered by Roger Seibel and Larry Crane (see photo below). Like the promo CD listed below, the spines have Elliott's name and the album written in slightly different handwriting than other pressings (see photo). Also like the promo, the song titles on back are bigger than the original Cavity Search CD. The promo of this CD has the Kill Rock Stars catalog number on the spine while this one has both the catalog number and the Kill Rock Stars logo on the spine. No matrix info listed on Discogs but barcode is 759656052320.
USA Promo CD [Kill Rock Stars KRS523; 2010 promo]
This is a promo CD for the 2010 reissue on Kill Rock Stars. It comes with no front cover or insert. The back cover has quite a few differences from the original Cavity Search CD. The song titles are much bigger on this release. The credits on the bottom of the back cover are much more extensive than the original. They mention the remastering by Roger Seibel and Larry Crane. It also mentions that hi-res photos, bio, etc. are available at the Kill Rock Stars site. Finally, a large portion of the bottom right corner of the back cover is a photo of the actual Roman Candle cover (see photo below). The CD face is the typical one other than it now has Kill Rock Stars logo and actually says "Elliott Smith Roman Candle" right above that logo, probably due to it being a promo with no front cover. The photo used on the CD face is a bit more faint than the original pressing also. Interestingly, the lettering on the spine for this promo and the regular 2010 Kill Rock Stars reissue (see above entry) are slighly different than the original Cavity Search CD and the Domino pressings I have seen. The printing of Elliott's name and the album title are quite a bit different than other pressings (photo below has this pressing on top with the original below). Some copies have a promo sticker from Terrorbird on the front of the case with some info about Elliott and the album along with recommended songs to listen to (see photo below).

USA LP [Kill Rock Stars KRS523; 2010 reissue]
This was the first time that Roman Candle was released on vinyl in the US. There are a few differences from the original 1998 Domino LP pressing. Like the 2010 Kill Rock Stars CD, this one has a sticker on the shrinkwrap mentioning the remastering. On this pressing, the song titles are printed much bigger on the back cover and take up much more space. Also, the record cover of this pressing is much more glossy than the original Domino pressing which was a bit more of a rough (or at least less glossy) texture. The opposite is true for the inner lyric sheet. While the original Domino pressing's sheet was glossy, this pressing has one that is more of a non-glossy paper. Matrix info according to Discogs:
- Barcode (Text): 7 59656 05231 3
- Barcode (Scanned): 759656052313
- Matrix / Runout (Side A): KRS-523-A S-71361 SAE MASTERING
- Matrix / Runout (Side B): KRS-523-B RE-1 S-71362 RE-1 SAE MASTERING

USA LP [Kill Rock Stars KRS523; 2016 reissue black vinyl]
This reissue of Roman Candle appears to be a black vinyl version that came out in 2016. The matrix numbers appear to be the same as those on the gold and black splatter vinyl from 2016 (see entry below), although there seem to be a few different matrix variations for this one according to Discogs. Barcode/matrix info according to Discogs:
- Barcode (Sticker): 7 59656 05238 2
- Barcode (Sleeve): 7 59656 05231 3
- Matrix / Runout (Side A, etched / stamped, variant 1): KRS-523-A S-71361 / 133924E1/A SAE MASTERING
- Matrix / Runout (Side A, etched / stamped, variant 2): KRS-523-A S-71361 / 133924E1/A4 SAE MASTERING

USA LP [Kill Rock Stars KRS523; 2016 reissue gold with black splatter vinyl]
This reissue was available from Newbury Comics and was limited to 1,000 copies. It's on gold and black splatter vinyl. The packaging is mostly the same as usual. It differs from the original 1998 vinyl in a few ways. Of course, it has Kill Rock Stars logo and info instead of Domino. The text on the spine is much larger than the original pressing. So are the song titles on the back cover which has pushed them much closer to the edge of the back cover. The publishing credits on the bottom of the back cover are smaller than the original pressing. Barcode/matrix info according to Discogs:

USA LP [Kill Rock Stars KRS523; 2020 reissue on clear with metallic gold splatter vinyl]
This reissue was available exclusively from Newbury Comics and was limited to 750 copies. It comes on clear with metallic gold splatter vinyl. Like the other Kill Rock Stars reissues of Roman Candle, the writing on the spine and the back are much bigger than the original Domino pressing. It comes with the typical lyric/credits insert. Some past pressings of Roman Candle had a glossy cover but non-glossy insert or vice versa. For this pressing, both the cover and insert are glossy. It also came with a code to download mp3's. The shrinkwrap had a sticker on it explaining details of this pressing.
USA LP [Kill Rock Stars KRS523; 2021 reissue]
Kill Rock Stars reissued Roman Candle on black vinyl in 2021. There wasn't much info from KRS about this reissue so I tried comparing it to past pressings. Between barcode and matrix numbers, there are a lot of similarities to past pressings but nothing that seemed exactly the same. It's too difficult to compare and contrast them all. So here's just the details for this pressing. Barcode is 7 59656 05231 3. It's on black vinyl and comes with a small paper download card with the album cover on it. The side A etchings are KRS-523-A and S-71361, those ones are hand etched. Laser etched on to side A is 133924E1/A4 and SAE MASTERING. Hand etched on side B is KRS-523-BRE-1 and S-71362 RE-1. Laser etched on to side B is 133924E2/A and SAE Mastering. The vinyl itself feels much lighter and looks much thinner than the 2010 black vinyl pressing on KRS. It's actually possible that this is just a variant matrix of the 2016 black vinyl but I'm not sure at this point.
USA LP [Kill Rock Stars KRS523; pink vinyl 2021 reissue]
This 2021 reissue of Roman Candle is on pink vinyl. It was part of Kill Rock Stars' celebration of their 30th anniversary as a record label. Like many other KRS releases, it was given a very limited run on pink vinyl, just 91 copies. All copies are numbered.
In February 2024, Kill Rock Stars put a limited amount of additional pink vinyl copies up for sale for many of Elliott's records, including this one. These ones were not numbered but presumably everything else about these are the same as the 2021 pink vinyl copies. They were listed as a "warehouse find" so they probably had a few left over of each release, that they put for sale at this time. The few of them that I've seen have had a small round sticker on the shrink wrap that says "Ltd. Edition Colored Vinyl" and has the KRS logo on it.
The one major exception to all this was the self-titled pink copies sold in 2024. These were in regular, single LP self-titled sleeves as opposed to the 2021 pink copies that came with the coffee table book and two LP's. These may not have been leftovers but an actual full batch of 91-ish (it said 115 copies on the KRS bandcamp page) that were never sold in 2021 and were only sold in 2024.
USA LP [Kill Rock Stars KRS523; 2021 black vinyl reissue for KRS 30th anniversary]
Kill Rock Stars reissued Roman Candle in 2021 with a special sticker on the shrink wrap to celebrate the label's 30th anniversary. My copy is still sealed but I am pretty sure it's black vinyl and nothing different or special on this pressing other than the hype sticker on the front. The sticker has the KRS30 logo and a quote about the album from Darryl Cater of All Music.
USA LP [Kill Rock Stars KRS523; 2021 mollusk green vinyl reissue]
This 2021 reissue of Roman Candle was on Kill Rock Stars but was available exclusively through Bull Moose record store. It is on mollusk green colored vinyl and limited to 250 copies. The front shrink wrap has a Bull Moose sticker explaining all the details of the pressing.

USA LP [Kill Rock Stars KRS523; 2022 Jackpot Records reissue on clear vinyl with metallic gold and black splatter]
This 2022 reissue of Roman Candle was on Kill Rock Stars but was available exclusively through Jackpot Records. It is on clear vinyl with metallic gold and black splatter and limited to 1,000 copies. The front shrink wrap has a sticker explaining all the details of the pressing along with a quote about the album by Darryl Cater of ALL MUSIC.

USA LP Test Pressing [Kill Rock Stars KRS523; 2023 (or 2022?) from reissue pressing]
This is a test pressing from a reissue of Roman Candle that probably came out in 2022 or 2023. The copy I have seen just comes in a plain white outer sleeve and the record has totally blank center labels. No indication which album this is other than identifying it by the matrix numbers. Side A has matrix of KRS523 A and then also 40628.1(3)... along with TELEGRAPH-GONSALVES. Side B is identical other than it's changed to KRS523 B and 40628.2(3). I believe that most or all previous Roman Candle vinyl was mastered at SAE and the matrix indicated that. But this one was done at Telegraph by Adam Gonsalves. Like a similar New Moon pressing, he let me know that it was done in 2022 but I'm not sure if the records started showing up in stores in 2022 or 2023 so I'm not sure which year to accurately place it in. I have not come across the corresponding commercially available version with these matrix numbers but it's got to be out there. Please see photos below for the very plain packaging of this test pressing.
USA LP [Kill Rock Stars KRS523; 2023 black vinyl with KRS sticker]
Kill Rock Stars reissued Roman Candle with a KRS sticker on the shrink wrap in late 2022 or early 2023 (as they did with some or all of the other albums that are on KRS). The sticker is similar to the 2021 sticker used to celebrate the label's 30th anniversary. But this sticker just has the KRS logo and no mention of 30 years. They seemed to first show up on social media and in stores around mid-January of 2023. Presumably, the record itself is the exact same pressing as the 2021 pressing with the same matrix and everything but I'm not positive. The sticker has the same quote about the album from Darryl Cater of All Music that the 2021 sticker had. One interesting thing is that most or all older pressings have the record in a plain white sleeve and the lyrics are printed on an insert. However, this copy has the lyrics, and a photo, on the actual inner sleeve. This is the first pressing that I've noticed this way, although some of my other recent pressings are still sealed and could also have this feature. Please see the photos below for the hype sticker (which you can compare to the 30th anniversary one) and one side of the printed inner sleeve.

USA LP [Kill Rock Stars KRS523; 2023 Bandbox reissue on orange and black tie dye vinyl]
This 2023 reissue of Roman Candle was on Kill Rock Stars but was available exclusively through Bandbox. It is on orange and black tie dye vinyl. This pressing was announced and pre-sold in July 2023. It kept getting delayed and eventually Bandbox went out of business in March 2024 before most orders were shipped to buyers. Some Discogs users have clicked that it's in their collection and photos of it exist on Discogs. I believe that some people asked Bandbox why the delay was taking so long and Bandbox agreed to ship the album without the zine that was supposed to eventually go with it. As of this writing, there are likely few of these with actual fans or collectors and probably none of them have the zine. It is still up in the air at this point (March 2024) if other buyers will ever get theirs.

USA LP [Kill Rock Stars KRS523; 2024 Magnolia Record Store reissue on purple blast vinyl]
This pressing of Roman Candle came out in 2024 and was available exclusively from Magnolia Record Store. I haven't seen any mention of how many copies were pressed, there just doesn't seem to be too much info about this pressing at all. The front shrink wrap doesn't have any kind of special hype sticker. I've only seen copies with a sticker on the back of the shrink wrap. This sticker has a barcode and says Purple Blast on it.

USA LP [Kill Rock Stars KRS523; 2024 indie exclusive reissue on opaque peach vinyl]
This 2024 reissue of Roman candle was an indie exclusive vinyl, presumably just being sold at independent record stores. I have not seen any mention of how many of these were pressed. It is on opaque peach vinyl. It comes with a hype sticker on the front with a quote about the album from Darryl Cater of ALL MUSIC.

USA Cassette [Cavity Search CSR13; original 1994 pressing]
This is the original 1994 cassette pressing. It has the same cover photo that's used on all other pressings but cropped due to it being used on a cassette release. Elliott’s name on the spine is the same as the 1994 original CD (as opposed to some later reissues with his name written slightly differently). The j-card is basically the same as the CD booklet, with lyrics and credits, but it does not have the two photos of Elliott that appear in the CD booklet.

Australia CD [Domino 3863292; year unknown]
This Australian CD was put out by Domino but I'm not sure what year it came out. Most of the artwork seems typical other than basic differences like catalog number, etc. The back cover mentions it being from Australia. It's also given the catalog number of 3863292 which appears on the spine and the face of the CD. Barcode and other info taken from Discogs:

Europe CD [Labels 724384632427; 1998 reissue CD]
This 1998 reissue CD is listed as being a European release on Discogs. It does say Made in E.U. on the CD itself. But also has French writing in the credits along the outer edge of the CD so perhaps actually a French pressing? It appears to be on a French record label that's actually called Labels. It does also have the Domino logo on the CD and the Domino and Cavity Search logos on the back cover. The handwriting font on the spines is the same as the original Cavity Search pressing (not like the 2010 KRS reissues with different writing) but is all in white unlike the original that has some of the text in gold. Song titles on back are also the same size as the original CD pressing. The booklet is the same as usual except the back panel has the long catalog number up in the corner where Elliott's hair is. Barcode/matrix info according to Discogs:

Europe CD [Universal Music Group International 0602547529435; 2016 reissue CD]
According to Discogs, this reissue CD came out in 2016. The packaging is mainly the same as most other Roman Candle CD's other than the typical record label/catalog number differences. But there are a few notable things. Elliott's name on one spine is written in a color that blends in with the background more than most pressings. Also, the fireworks on the face of the CD look a bit different, like brighter or overexposed. One pretty big difference is that the back tray, where the CD fits into, is clear while it's a black tray on most other pressings. Barcode/matrix info according to Discogs:

No matrix info on Discogs but the barcode is listed as 0602547529442.

Japan CD [P-Vine/Kill Rock Stars PCD-22338]
This Japanese CD pressing of Roman Candle was released in 2010 according to an entry on the P-Vine website (see photo below). Kill Rock Stars licensed P-Vine, a Japanese record label, to release a lot of Elliott's albums around 2007-2010 or so.

UK LP [Domino REWIGLP75; 2010 reissue]
This 2010 reissue LP on Domino was given a different catalog number than the original pressing from 1998. The original was REWIGLP2, this one is REWIGLP75. El Alliott's name and the album title on the spine are a little bigger than the original Domino pressing but smaller than most other reissue pressings . Compared to the 1998 Domino pressing, the Domino logo is much closer to the bottom right corner. Also, the barcode has moved from the bottom right to the top right. This pressing includes the typical insert with lyrics.
According to Discogs:
Sticker on outer sleeve reads 'Elliott Smith roman candle / the debut album on 180 gram vinyl / remastered by Roger Seibel and Larry Crane / digital code inside for free download of album'. Barcode/matrix info according to Discogs:

UK CD [Domino REWIGCD2; 1998 pressing]
Two different pressings, both from 1998, and both with the same catalog number and barcode number are listed on Discogs. It looks like the matrix/runout info on the inner circle of the CD may be different but perhaps that is the only difference between these two pressings. The packaging is mainly the same as the original 1994 Cavity Search CD other than having the info and logo for Domino rather than Cavity Search. However, the spine is slightly different. This pressing has Elliott Smith and Roman Candle all in white on both spines. The original Cavity Search pressing had Elliott Smith written in a gold-ish color on one spine (with Roman Candle in white) and Roman Candle in that color on the other spine (with Elliott Smith in white).
UK Promo CD [Domino REWIGCD2P; 1998 reissue promo]
This is a promo CD for the 1998 UK CD on Domino. According to Discogs, this was distributed in a clear plastic double wallet along with the promo CD for the self-titled album (REWIGCD1P).

UK CD [Domino REWIGCD2; 2003 reissue]
This reissue CD came out in 2003 according to Discogs although that date isn't listed on the CD anywhere. The catalog number is the same as the 1998 CD pressing (2010's reissue had a new catalog number). In fact, most of this is identical to the 1998 pressing on Domino. The spines look exactly the same as does the CD face and the barcode. The page of the booklet pictured below seems to have a bit of a different shade of the background color, a pretty minor difference. The only somewhat significant difference is the bottom right of the back cover which mentions the Estate of Elliott Smith and not just the typical Domino info from the 1998 pressing. And this estate info and Domino's address, etc. are typed out on this pressing as opposed to being in a printed font on the 1998 pressing.
UK CD [Domino REWIGCD75, 2010 reissue]
Like the US 2010 reissue on Kill Rock Stars, this reissue on Domino also has a sticker on the shrinkwrap that says "Elliott Smith Roman Candle/Remastered by Robert Seibel and Larry Crane". The sticker on the US version has rounded corners but this UK version of the sticker is an actual rectangle with pointy corners. Like the US 2010 reissue, the spine has Elliott's name written with different handwriting than most other pressing. Barcode according to Discogs is 5034202207528.
UK Promo CD [Domino REWIGCD75, 2010 reissue]
Promo CD for the 2010 UK reissue on Domino. This was released in a plastic sleeve with a double sided insert that is attached on the left side. The back says "For promotional use only/Not for sale", as does the CD itself. At least some copies have a sticker on the plastic sleeve detailing the reissue and Larry Crane's and Roger Seibel's involvement in it along with the Domino logo and contact info for Domino. Like some other reissues, the song titles on the back are printed much larger than on the original Cavity Search and Domino CD pressings.
