The deluxe LP pressed in 2024 didn't add anything additional to the liner notes except to say that "Miss Misery" was produced by Larry Crane. However, Larry has corrected that information and said the song was co-produced by Elliott and Larry.
Larry also stated that "Baby Britain" was recorded by Joanna Bolme (not Larry as stated in the liner notes) and that Paul Pulvirenti played drums on that song.
Larry also stated that he recorded "Waltz #1 - demo version" from the extra tracks.
USA LP [Bong Load BL35]
Despite XO being released on Dreamworks Records, the original vinyl pressing was actually on Bong Load Records. It's 180g vinyl and touted as being limited edition although there is no mention of how many were pressed. It includes a glossy two-sided insert with lyrics and album credits on it. The insert states that photographs were by Eric Matthies and sleeve by Johnson and Wolverton. It came with a sticker on the shrinkwrap indicating that it was on 180g vinyl. According to Charlie from the Sweet Adeline site, this vinyl pressing came out on August 18, 1998, one week before the CD and cassette. Barcode/matrix info according to Discogs:
- Barcode: 7 08474 00351 9

USA LP [Plain plain126; 180g 2008 black vinyl reissue]
Plain Recordings looks to have released two different reissues of XO in 2008. One is on white vinyl and this pressing is on black vinyl. It's on 180g vinyl. The center labels have a different design than the original Bong Load pressing (see photos below). The spine is the same as described in the white vinyl entry below. It comes with the typical insert. The back cover has 2008 copyright which makes it easy to distinguish from the 2012 Plain pressing. Matrix/barcode info according to Discogs:

USA LP [Plain plain126; 180g 2008 white vinyl reissue]
Plain Recordings looks to have released two different reissues of XO in 2008. One is on black vinyl (see entry above) and this pressing is on 180g white vinyl, limited to 500 copies. Like the Plain black vinyl version, the record labels are different than the original Bong Load labels. The packaging and art are mostly the same (including insert) as the Bong Load pressing other than the Plain Records info at the bottom of the back cover rather than Bong Load's info. The back shrinkwrap does have a sticker with which number pressing out of 500 that exactly copy happens to be. Also, the info on the spine is situated differently. The Bong Load pressing has Elliott's name and XO right in the middle of the spine with record label info on the top and bottom part of the spine. This Plain pressing has Elliott's name and XO way at the top part of the spine with plain126 written just a bit lower. Barcode/matrix info according to Discogs:

USA Test Pressing LP [Plain plain126; 2008 reissue]
This is a test pressing for the 2008 Plain Recordings reissue of XO (see two entries above). The photo on Discogs shows that it was pressed at the Rainbo pressing plant. Matrix info according to Discogs:

USA LP [Plain plain126; 180 g 2012 reissue]
Plain Recordings reissued XO on 180g vinyl again in 2012 in addition to the 2008 reissue. My copy that I got used doesn't have the sticker that says "Elliott Smith XO Available on LP for the first time in almost 10 years with original artwork, lyric sheet insert, and heavyweight 180-gram vinyl." According to Discogs, this pressing came with that sticker but the 10 years would have made more sense for the 2008 pressing. So I'm not sure if it really came with these 2012 versions. The back cover does have a 2012 copyright date which does make it easy to distinguish from the 2008 pressings. Also, over the barcode, it says "Universal Music Special Markets", which isn't on the 2008 pressing. Additionally, the mailing address for Plain is now listed in San Rafael, CA while the 2008 pressing had it as San Francisco. The placement of Elliott's name and album title on the spine is different than the 2008 Plain pressing and also different than the original Bong Load pressing or any more recent reissues also. Barcode/matrix info according to Discogs:

USA LP [Bong Load BL35; 180g hazel black smoke vinyl 2016 reissue]
With this reissue, XO was released on a Bong Load pressing for the first time since the original 1998 pressing. This one is on 180g vinyl that is called hazel black smoke vinyl and is limited to 2,016 copies. Photos on Discogs show a sticker on the shrinkwrap stating that it's a limited edition and on 180g vinyl but copies have also been since without this sticker affixed to it. The back artwork differs from the original Bong Load pressing in many ways. Primarily, there are different photos used on the back than the original (see photo below). Also, the song titles are broken down by Side One and Side Two rather than just a straight listing of the fourteen songs. The note to send a stamp to Bong Load for a catalog is now gone. The Bong Load logo has moved from the bottom right corner to the bottom left corner (the logo also now also has a part that says Bong Load has been around for 25 years). Also, the bottom right of the back cover now has the details of which number this exact copy is out of the 2,016 copies pressed. The 2,016 is printed in white but the number of your copy is silver embossed on to the sleeve. The insert included with the record also differs from the original insert (see photos) and the inner sleeve has the Bong Load logo on each side. The spine also differs from the original in that a different font is used for all the writing, along with the placement of all the information being different. USA LP [Geffen B0026090-01; 2017 reissue]
It appears that Geffen reissued XO in 2017 on both colored vinyl and black vinyl. This is the black vinyl version. Curiously, Discogs lists the matrix info as saying something about Plain (who had earlier reissued XO) so not sure how accurate the Discogs info is on this one. However, the colored vinyl version (see entry below) is also on Geffen and does indeed say Plain in the matrix. There are no photos on Discogs specific to this pressing. Barcode/matrix info according to Discogs:
- Barcode (Printed): 6 02557 28351 8
- Matrix / Runout (Side One): B0026090-01 PLAIN 126 A RE.2 BGS S-63944 RE-2

USA LP [Geffen B0026090-01; 2017 reissue black and white marbled vinyl]
This is the colored vinyl version of the two Geffen reissues in 2017 (see entry above for the black vinyl version). It is on black and white marbled vinyl. According to Discogs, it is limited to 500 copies but there is no numbering on the artwork. The artwork is mostly true to the original 1998 Bong Load pressing other than that it has the insert that appeared in other reissues that has some pictures rather than just an insert with text only. One difference from most earlier pressings on the front artwork is the appearance of a Parental Advisory, Explicit Content label in the bottom left corner. The matrix info does actually include "Plain" interestingly enough, as does the black vinyl version above. Barcode according to Discogs is 6 02557 28351 8.

USA LP [Geffen IVC 10; 2024 reissue opaque brown vinyl with deluxe version/extra tracks]
This 2024 pressing of XO was the first time that the deluxe edition had been released on vinyl or any physical format (it had been released digitally previously). So it has nine extra songs compared to any previously released vinyl of XO. It was available from the Interscope Vinyl Collective. You had to subscribe (for anywhere from a month to a year) in order to get this record although many appeared on the secondary market immediately. It's a double album and both records are on opaque brown vinyl. It is in a gatefold sleeve and is numbered on the back. There were 4,000 copies pressed. It also includes a lithograph of Elliott. One interesting difference from any previous vinyl pressing is the border around the front and back artwork.

USA Test Pressing LP [Geffen IVC 10; 2024 with deluxe version/extra tracks]
This is the test pressing for the 2024 IVC XO deluxe vinyl. It comes on two records and has the same extra tracks as the opaque brown vinyl pressing that was available with the subscription. Thanks to Charlie for the photos.
USA CD [Dreamworks DRMD-50048]
This is the original US CD pressing of XO. There are several listings of this CD on Discogs that have the same catalog number and barcode but only seem to differ in matrix info so they are all listed in this entry. The packaging basically is the same as the original LP pressing other than the Dreamworks credit and info rather than Bong Load. It comes with a six panel booklet that contains lyrics, credits, and photos. There is also a Discogs listing that seems to be the same as this in every way but apparently with "promotional" stamped on the disc as the only difference (see last photo below). Four actual unique, promo CD's are listed in the next four entries below. Barcode/matrix info according to Discogs:

USA Promo CD [Dreamworks DRMD-A-50048]
There are many similar but different US promo CD's that Dreamworks released for XO. Please see the other entries for differences. This one comes in a standard jewel case but does not have a front insert. It is only the CD and a back insert. The back insert states that it's an advance CD, promotional copy, and not for sale. The song titles are listed in two neat columns side by side. The CD face has the same info about it being a promo but also has the term "Advance CD" going across diagonally near the top. Oh Well, Okay is written as Oh Well, OK.
Some photos taken from discogs.com.
USA Promo CD [Dreamworks no catalog number]
This is one of many different US promo CD's of XO. This one does have a front and back insert. The front insert lists the songs straight down in one column and states that it's an advance CD, promotional copy, and not for sale. The back insert is mostly plain other than info about the duplication company along the bottom. The CD face is gold and has the tracklisting. There doesn't appear to be a catalog number for this CD but the CD face has the number 10616 printed on it. Tomorrow Tomorrow is written with a comma in it (as Tomorrow, Tomorrow). Bottle Up and Explode! is written with an ampersand (as Bottle up & Explode!). Everybody Cares, Everybody Understands accidentally leaves the last S off of the word understands on the front insert but spells it correctly on the face of the CD.
USA Promo CD [Dreamworks no catalog number]
This is one of many different US promo CD's of XO. This one does have a front and back insert and is very similar to the entry above, although there are some differences. The front insert lists the songs straight down in one column and states that it's an advance CD, promotional copy, and not for sale. The back insert is mostly plain other than info about the duplication company along the bottom. The CD face is gold and has the tracklisting. There doesn't appear to be a catalog number for this CD but the CD face has the number 9830 printed on it. Tomorrow Tomorrow is written with a comma in it (as Tomorrow, Tomorrow). Bottle Up and Explode! is written with an ampersand (as Bottle up & Explode!). Unlike the entry above, Everybody Cares, Everybody Understands does have the last S on the word understands on the front insert. Also, while the formatting of the insert is quite similar to the entry above, the spacing of the song titles are different. Also, Elliott's name on the front insert basically touches the word "records" in Dreamworks Records on this copy while the one above has some space between them (see photos of the two entries for comparison). The spine is also different on this copy. Elliott's name and the album title are bigger on this version than the one listed above and shifted to the left. The word Dreamworks is also in a different font and slanted/italics on this one.
USA Promo CD [Dreamworks no catalog number]
This is one of many different XO US promo CD's. Like the entry above, there is no catalog number listed on this release. It comes with a front and back insert. The back insert is totally blank. The front insert has the songs listed but instead of being in one straight column, they are instead centered on the insert without lining up evenly on the left side (see photo). It mentions the CD being an advance CD, promo copy, and not for sale. The CD itself is again gold but doesn't list the song titles on this one. At the bottom, it does say "[Promotional Copy. Not for Sale.]". Oh Well, Okay is listed as Oh Well, OK. Bottle Up and Explode! is written with an ampersand (as Bottle Up & Explode!). The most significant difference in song titles listed is Everybody Cares, Everybody Understands being called Everybody Understands, Everybody (likely just a typo and not an alternate name for the song).
USA Promo CD [Dreamworks no catalog number]
This is one of mamy different US promo CD's for XO and probably the most interesting. It has an early tracklisting for the album which does not have Independence Day on it. That song was apparently a last minute addition to the album. This pressing also has a bit of a different order of the songs as Sweet Adeline is near the end, before I Didn't Understand. Also, Pitseleh is spelled as Pitzella. Bottle Up and Explode! is written with an ampersand (as Bottle Up & Explode!). The only difference I'm aware of as far as mixes of songs is that Everybody Cares, Everybody Understands has a few seconds of mumbly talking at the end. It sounds like people talking in the recording studio perhaps and you can hear someone say something about "classical music". This talking is not heard on the officially released album or any of the other promo CD’s. It comes in a standard jewel case with front and back inserts. The back insert simply has the information for the audio duplication company. The front insert has the songs listed and mentions it being an advance CD, promo copy, and not for sale. The CD face is gold. There doesn't appear to be a catalog number but 9756 is printed on the CD.
USA Promo CD [Dreamworks no catalog number]
This is one of many different US promo CD's for XO. Like the entry above, it has the early tracklisting and order, without having Independence Day on it. Pitseleh is spelled as Pitzella like on the entry above. The copies I've seen do not have any front or back inserts at all. Just a CD in a jewel case but I'm not sure if some could have inserts. The only real difference between this CD and the entry above is the number listed on the left side of the face of the CD. This copy has the number 9743 listed on the CD while the entry above has 9756 printed on the CD.
USA Promo CD [Dreamworks PRO-CD-5085]
The XO album was also promoted with this three song CD put out by Dreamworks. It is sort of titled XO also as that is printed right under Elliott's name on the cover. It contains Waltz #2(XO), Bottle Up and Explode!, and Oh Well, Okay. It comes in a standard jewel case which states that the photo is by Eric Matthies. The CD and back insert state that the songs are from the Dreamworks album XO, available on cassette and compact disc. The front insert is a photo of Elliott sitting down and playing guitar. It has the catalog number written in the bottom left corner. Matrix info according to Discogs:
- Matrix / Runout: wea mfg. OLYPHANT X5176 38 PRO CD 5085-2 01 M0S1

USA CD [Dreamworks DRMD-50048; club edition reissue, year unknown]
There are two listings on Discogs that appear to be club editions and they both state that they were manufactured for BMG Direct (there were two separate listings when I first wrote this but don't see the Discogs listing for variant 2 below anymore). So they were probably from a CD club where you got a bunch of CD's really cheap (for a penny?) and then promised to buy more at their regular price. There's only a few main differences from the regular CD pressing of XO. One is the section directly under the barcode. Instead of having the barcode number, it has info about it being manufactured for BMG Direct. The other difference is that the back cover of the booklet has the BMG Direct catalog number of D168384 printed there above the copyright info. (see photos for these two differences). Matrix info according to Discogs:

USA Cassette [Dreamworks DRMC-50048]
This 1998 pressing is the only cassette pressing of XO other than promo material. The artwork is the same as the LP but adapted to fit cassette packaging. The inside of the j-card has the lyrics and credits that are normally on the LP insert. Barcode according to Discogs is 6 0044-50048-4 9.

USA Promo Cassette [Dreamworks DRMD-50048]
This promo cassette for XO comes in a standard cassette case. The packaging states that it's an advance cassette, promo copy, and not for sale. The cassette itself is clear with what looks like a sticker put on it for the label on each side. This promo was probably made early in the promo process for XO since it has the different tracklist that one of the promo CD's (see entry earlier on this page) has. Pitseleh is spelled Pitzella, Independence Day is not on it, and the track order is different. Very importantly, the Discogs entry states "Some of these songs are different mixes from what appeared on the CD promo and different from the final album. " However, from opinions of others and my own that have heard it, there doesn't seem to be any significant differences in the mixes. Please let me know if you think otherwise. Based on the photos on Discogs and another copy I've seen, there appear to be two different j-cards that are close to identical but have some minor differences, such as number of periods before the song title Bled White.(see photos below).

Miss Misery/Waltz #2(XO) USA Promo Cassette [Dreamworks no catalog number]
This promo cassette is being listed in the XO section rather than the Miss Misery section because it was released shortly before the XO album and seemed to be more of a promotional item for this album rather than for Good Will Hunting. It comes in a cardboard case with openings on the top and bottom for the cassette to slide out of. Both sides of the cassette play Miss Misery and Waltz #2(XO). The back cover states that Miss Misery is from the Good Will Hunting soundtrack and that Waltz #2(XO) is from Elliott's Dreamworks debut XO, in stores August 25. It says "Promotion only. Not for sale" as does the cassette itself. There are at least two version of this cassette:
Version 1
Cassettes received from Tower Records. The back cover has a coupon that could've been cut out to receive $1 off XO at Tower when the album came out.
Version 2
Cassettes received from the Wherehouse record store. There is a coupon on the back cover that could've been cut out to receive XO for $8.99 on CD or $5.99 on cassette at The Wherehouse once it was released. The Wherehouse cassette was given out free to people who came into the store and rented the Good Will Hunting movie.

Australasia CD [Dreamworks DRMD-50048]
This CD pressing is very similar to the Australia pressing (see entry below) except that it was marketed to Australasia (Australia, New Zealand, and a few other places to my understanding) and not just Australia itself. The barcode is the same as the Australian pressing except this one doesn't have any dashes in the barcode numbers while the Australia one does. The legal info on the back cover and on the inner ring of the CD both mention that the CD was made in Australia but marketed in Australasia. Also, the rectangular box with the legal info on the back cover has a solid black background behind the words on this pressing. The regular Australian pressing has the legal info in the same area next to the barcode but behind the wording is just the back cover photo (see photos below)

Australia CD [Dreamworks DRMD-50048]
Almost everything about this Australian pressing looks exactly like the Dreamworks US pressing from 1998. You have to look really carefully at the copyright info on the back cover to see that it does mention Australia on there. It comes with the typical six panel booklet. Some copies do have a red sticker on the front of the jewel case with praise for the album by SMH, The Age, and Courier Mail. Copies with this sticker on front are the easiest to identify as the Australian pressing. Barcode/matrix info according to Discogs:

Elliott Smith Cassette Sampler Australian Promo Cassette [Dreamworks ESSAMP1]
This is a very interesting cassette that was used in Australia to promote the XO album. It's also listed as Snippets From XO on Discogs . The front and back packaging do not call it by that name but the cassette itself does call it Snippets From XO. The front shows a small version of the album artwork and mentions that it contains "excerpts from his stunning new album...XO". It also has a quote from Billboard magazine at the bottom. The back lists the songs on it, all of which are just excerpts and not the full songs (Waltz #2(XO), Baby Britain, Sweet Adeline, Bled White, Tomorrow Tomorrow, and Bottle Up and Explode!). It also says "Album OUT NOW Through Universal Music Australia" and lists five Australian tour dates.

Canada CD [Dreamworks DRMSD-50048]
This Canadian CD was released in 1998 at the time of XO's initial release. Artwork and design are the same as the US pressing other than details about it being from Canada being mentioned in the copyright info on the back cover. Barcode according to Discogs is 6 0044-50048-2 5.

Europe LP [Geffen 00602557283518; 2017 reissue]
This appears to be the only pressing of XO on vinyl released outside of the US and it wasn't released until 2017. It's part of the Back to Black vinyl series put out by Universal/Geffen. Barcode according to Discogs is 602557283518.

Europe CD [Dreamworks DRD 50048]
This XO pressing came out in Europe in 1998 so it was either released on the initial release date or shortly thereafter. It presumably has similar artwork/packaging as the US pressing. Barcode/matrix info according to Discogs:

Europe CD [Dreamworks 450 048-2/DRD 50048;1999 reissue]
There are four entries in Discogs that seem to be reissues of XO on CD in Europe. Two of them are listed as being from 1999 and two of them have year as unknown. They all appear to be similar to each other and share just minor differences from the original 1998 Europe CD pressing. The spines are definitely different from the 1998 one in that they have the extra number 450 048-2 written in addition to the typical catalog number. This extra number also appears alongside the barcode on the back cover but does not appear there on the 1998 pressing. These four reissues mostly appear to only differ from each other in the matrix info. They are all being listed in this one entry.
----------------------------------------------------
France CD [Dreamworks DRD50016]
The most important part of this French release of XO is that early (or all?) copies came with a second CD of bonus songs. That bonus CD has it's own entry below. The main XO CD appears to just be a normal European CD. It says made in the EU and there is nothing on it specifically stating that it's a French release. It was simply shrinkwrapped together with the French bonus CD for the French market.
France XO Bonus CD [Dreamworks/Universal DRD50016]
This is the bonus CD that came with the French pressing of XO on CD (see entry above). It has the songs Our Thing, How to Take a Fall, and Some Song. It's in a cardboard sleeve and has both the Universal and Dreamworks labels on the back cover. The front cover is identical to the album. The back cover also has a small white sticker on it that says CD2 and some words in French. Barcode/matrix info according to Discogs:
- Barcode: 0 600445 001626

Japan CD [Dreamworks DRMD-50061/MVCA-24011]
This Japanese CD adds the bonus track Miss Misery. Mostly the art and packaging is the same as the US version although there are two significant additions to this pressing. Since it's a Japanese pressing, it adds an obi that goes over the left side of the jewel case. Also there is a 12 page booklet, mostly in Japanese. However, this booklet does have the song titles listed in English and also has the lyrics for Miss Misery in English. Most of the rest of the packaging is pretty standard except the back cover does not have a barcode, there is some other sort of writing in that space. Matrix info according to Discogs:
- Matrix / Runout (Variant 1): MVCA-24011-1 1W V
- Matrix / Runout (Variant 2): MVCA-24011-1 5W V
- Mastering SID Code: IFPI L244

Japan promo CD [Dreamworks DRMD-50061/MVCA-24011]
This Japanese CD is mostly similar to the version listed above but it is a promotional copy of the 1998 pressing. The first of the two main differences is that the back cover has a little rectangular sticker that says "sample " in English along with some Japanese writing and a number. The second difference is that the inner ring of the CD says "sample" in really small writing. Like the non-promo version above, it adds the bonus track Miss Misery and the obi. Also there is the same extra 12 page booklet, mostly in Japanese.

Japan CD [Dreamworks/Universal UICY-60073, 2009 reissue]
This is a 2009 reissue of the Japanese CD. It also has Miss Misery as a bonus track. This release is mostly similar to the entry above. It also comes with the extra Japanese booklet. The majority of differences are just related to the catalog number and record label/legal fine print. The one major difference is the obi. It has a drastically different design than the original pressing (see photos below). Barcode and matrix info below taken from Discogs:
- Barcode (Printed): 4 988005 541734

South Korea CD [Universal DD9211]
This is the only South Korean release of XO on any format and it looks to have come out upon the album's initial release in 1998. It comes with a unique South Korean obi and a unique sticker on the front of the shrink wrap. Other than the face of the CD and the back cover stating "Registered No. 776, The Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Manufactured & Printed in Korea", there isn't too much unique and exciting about the packaging, no extra inserts or booklets. Barcode according to discogs is 8808678231090.

Discogs lists this as an undated promo cassette but it likely came out in 1998 when the album did. The j-card has song titles, album title and also says Masterpiece Mastering on it. More info and photos are needed on this one.
