This is another case of some vague and conflicting info being out there. Elliott definitely sang backing vocals on two songs by The Spinanes that were released in 1996. Those songs were Madding and For No One Else. It appears that the recording sessions likely happened in Fall 1995, see below for more details.
The Madding single came out on 1-29-96 so please see that entry for more information on the single.
The Strand album came out 2-27-96 so please see that entry for more information on the album.
As far as the recording details of those songs, the info online from Eddie Brock's research says that those songs were recorded in January 1996. However, the 7" single of Madding (which Elliott sang on) came out in late January. Turnaround times for vinyl and CD were faster back then but it seems doubtful that recording of the songs and the release (of at least one of the songs) happened in the same month. I ended up messaging with Rebecca Gates of the Spinanes on Instagram. She told me that the album was mixed in December 1995 so her best estimate is that it was recorded in Fall 1995 so that's where I'm placing it on this timeilne.
As far as the other recording details. Eddie's info says that the songs were recorded at John Moen's house in Portland, OR and they were produced by Davis McCain. However, the liner notes from the album have some different info. The album says it's produced by The Spinanes and it gives some thanks to Davis McCain and a few others so maybe they assisted in the producing? The album also doesn't mention anything about being recorded at John Moen's house. It says recorded by Doug Easley and Davis McCain at Easley Recording in Memphis. But with additional recording by John Goodmanson at John and Stu's place and also by Barrett Jones and Brad Wood at Idful Music in Chicago.
